Far from being cowed at the sight of his team being stopped a long way inside the distance by the Springboks, Eddie Jones bounced back off the ropes during the after-match press conference.
A South African reporter asked: “You expressed your disappointment that you were not playing the first-choice Springbok side. Is that a bit of a relief now?’’
Jones answered as best he could in the circumstances but couldn’t resist offering his inquisitor a gratuitous piece of advice. “Mate,’’ he said. “You don’t have to be a smart-arse.’’
