MAYBE one day, before he grows old and grey, Finn Russell will look back with regret at missing yesterday’s Calcutta Cup match. Whatever happened to prompt his banishment from the squad for disciplinary reasons before the Ireland match, a rapprochement is still to be reached.
Russell’s failure to apologise denied him the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of three successive matches against England without defeat following the 26-15 win two years ago and the 76-point draw at Twickenham last year. Goodness knows when a Scottish standoff last achieved something like that, if ever.
