What makes this season even more of a travesty is that Steve Diamond, Newcastle’s consultant rugby director, who reiterated his support for promotion and relegation in The Rugby Paper last weekend, did so knowing that his team is safe from relegation this season.
Diamond understands that as long as the Premiership cartel mechanisms of reduced funding for promoted Championship clubs, and protectionist minimum standards, remain in place next season, Newcastle have every chance of remaining in the Premiership.
