There is a schism waiting to happen in the English game, and it was in clear sight when the RFU’s financial and governance issues were whitewashed by the RFU Board at a Council meeting at Twickenham on Friday.
The RFU Board’s control of the Council, thanks to almost half of its 65-strong membership owing their positions to Board patronage, paid off when a rebel group of 30 wavered in its commitment to hold it to account for inadequate leadership.
