The warning signs that the RFU’s administrative standards have plumbed the depths became a red flashing light on Friday when senior administrators were forced into an abject apology for their inept handling of an edict to community clubs to lower the height of the tackle.
While it was an RFU Council meeting last week that rubber-stamped the “waist and below” order to amateur clubs, the culprits behind the decision – taken without any consultation – were the increasingly autocratic RFU Board, headed by chairman Tom Ilube, and its £700,000 a year chief executive Bill Sweeney.
