Ealing Trailfinders knew it was a big day and they gave it a proper lash. A single point behind Leicester with 90 seconds left on the clock, they were a Billy Twelvetrees drop goal from a place in the Premiership Cup final, which rather suggested that the Londoners didn’t know their place at all.
One messed-up backline move later, order was restored and Premiership ring-fencers across the land were able to settle back on their chaise longues with double gins for company. “They couldn’t even beat Leicester Seconds,” you could hear them say. “Told you so.”
