HE was born in the Old Town of Edinburgh, died in the New Town and spent much of his life within gentle strolling distance of a freshly renamed patch of land to the west of the city centre: Murrayfield. It would be nice to think of David Hume, that giant of the Scottish Enlightenment, as the house philosopher of the national rugby team, but as the union game wasn’t even a thing in the 1770s, they must make do with Jim Telfer instead.
