This Italian squad are good – but not quite their best side

Having reported on Italy since the early 1990s, I wouldn’t hesitate to nominate the current crop as the strongest all-round Azzurri squad in modern history …but I’m not sure yet whether they are the best Italy side ever.
The jury is out but we will surely know more this afternoon when a fully booted and suited France, smarting from defeat at Twickenham, go looking for revenge at Stadio Olympico.
The class of 24-25 have back up and cover in most positions, big injuries don’t automatically torpedo their chances.
