Looking back over the long history of intimidatory tactics employed on an international rugby pitch, the decision of certain Welsh forwards to take the field against Scotland with identical skinhead haircuts was some way short of the scariest.
The Scottish skipper David Sole, probably the most gifted loosehead prop of the late 1980s and early 90s, would not have given a monkey’s if his opponents had emerged from the tunnel in Bovver boots and braces and shouted “Oi!” at the end of the national anthem. “Nice hair,” he is reported to have said at the first scrum. “Now what?”
