1. Pascal Ondarts – French prop who would scare me when I saw him in the tunnel before a game. A great front rower and a real character.
2. Sean Fitzpatrick – A very combative hooker and the most capped ever in that position, as well as an All Black skipper. Nice guy off the pitch but tough on it.
3. Iain Milne – An absolute colossus of a man and a British and Irish Lion. He was incredibly strong and a very good scrummager. Part of the Scotland team that won the Grand Slam in 1984.
4. Wade Dooley – The Blackpool Tower didn’t mess around on the pitch. A great servant to English rugby and it was good to have him on my side on the 1989 Lions tour.
5. Olivier Roumat – Always enjoyed playing against Olivier and got to captain him for the Baa-Baas in 1993. He was a great talent and fantastic around the pitch.
6. Laurent Cabannes – He probably played a little more at seven but I’ll have him at six. A hard, hard player who also had exceptional speed and was a remarkable ball carrier. Shame he lost a few years because of serious knee injuries.
7. Josh Kronfeld – He came from nowhere at the 1995 World Cup and was everywhere when he played. He replaced Michael Jones in that team and made an incredible impact.
8. Dean Richards – Tempted to put in Ben Clarke – the most spectacular No.8 I’ve faced – but Deano was an old school No.8 and you always knew you had played against him.
9. Joost Van der Westhuizen – Someone very close to my heart because I’m a patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Plus he was a fantastic scrum-half.
10. Jonathan Davies – We didn’t see the best of him because of the time he spent in league, but he was a great player for Wales. One of those who could make something out of nothing.
11. Jonah Lomu – In the 1995 World Cup he broke my tackle and then used my brother as a speed bump. He was just an exceptional player and unstoppable at that World Cup.
12. Tim Horan – Some of the quickest feet I’ve played against, I remember one try he scored against us in Brisbane in 1992 when he ran around me, then Iwan Tukalo, and then my brother to score an incredible try.
13. Philippe Sella – He was a beautiful runner and I made my debut against him. He was well on his way to his 111 caps by that point. I used to enjoy playing him and feel like I played some of my best rugby against him.
14. David Campese – Not only exceptionally quick but also had an incredible rugby brain. He could open you up from anywhere and would run off his wing and cause havoc.
15. Serge Blanco – A devastating runner who was just a magician with the ball in his hands. He had the speed to really scare defences and his positional play was fantastic. An incredible player.
