Glasgow hooker Pat MacArthur could make his Test debut off the bench after being named in the bench as Hall is out of the squad after failing a fitness test.
Despite their triumphant tour to Australasia last summer, including a 9-6 win over the , the Scots are on the back of four defeats and are bracing themselves to host the feisty Italians whose confidence will be sky-high after their 23-18 win over on Sunday.
In the only other change to the starting XV, 22-year-old Robert Harley will make his first start at Murrayfield takes over from the injured Alasdair Strokosch in the Scotland back-row.
Harley scored the match-winning try against Samoa on debut when he was introduced off the bench on the .
Strokosch will be examined by a specialist surgeon at Spire Murrayfield Hospital today to determine whether he can play any further part in the after the eye socket damage he sustained at the weekend.
A product of Douglas Academy in Milngavie and the West of Scotland club, Harley has played age-grade for Scotland, being a mainstay of the Scotland under-20 team in 2009 and 2010 and has also represented Scotland A. He has already undertaken captaincy duties with Glasgow Warriors.
Scotland interim head coach Scott Johnson said: “I had the pleasure of working with Robert on our tour last summer.
“He’s big and aggressive and he’s been knocking on the door for selection for a wee while.  He deserves this chance as a reward for his club form.
“Italy’s victory against France in Rome was well-deserved and certainly didn’t surprise us.  It will be a true Test match this weekend and it would be great to have a big vocal Murrayfield crowd supporting the boys this weekend.”
Meanwhile, Italy coach Jacques Brunel has kept faith in the team that shocked France in Rome last week bar one enforced change.
Inside centre Alberto Sgarbi sustained an ankle injury in the victory against Les Bleus and is replaced by the experienced Gonzalo Canale who is fit again having recovered from a thigh strain.
captain Gonzalo Garcia fills the gap on the bench while ‘s favourite Martin Castrogiovanni, who scored the match-winning try last Sunday, is named once again at tight-head.
