Exeter and Clermont earn European victories

Exeter have claimed a 30-20 win over the Scarlets at Sandy Park in the fourth round of the Heineken Cup today.
They went off to a flying start when Ian Whitten and Simon Alcott scored inside the first 15 minutes to lead 17-3.
The Scarlets came right back into the game just after the half hour mark with hooker Ken Owens crossing over from close range.
But Gareth Steenson kicked his second penalty of the half and the Chiefs were leading 20-13 at the break.
Scott Williams went over in the second half to level the score at 20-20 but Steenson put the Chiefs three points clear with his third penalty of the game before James Scaysbrook sealed the win on the last play of the game.
In Dublin, Clermont confirmed they are the team to beat this season with a convincing 28-21 win over Leinster.
Jonathan Sexton and Morgan Parra exchanged penalties to see the French lead 9-6 after 30 minutes before France centre Welsey Fofana bulldozed his way over to put Clermont 16-6 in front at the break.
Sexton reduced the gap early but Parra added three further penalties to extend the gap for Clermont.
Shane Jennings scored for the home side with 15 minutes to go but Parra was once again accurate with the boot and kicked another penalty to set Leinster back.
Fergus McFadden crossed the line on the last play of the game but it was too little too late and, despite the losing bonus-point, it looks like the reigning double Heineken Cup champions will have to fight for a qualification in the Amlin Cup as best runner-up.
