1. Tom Smith – Relatively slight in a world of heavyweights, ‘Psycho’ punched well above his weight and possessed the skill of a world class centre.
2. Gordon Bulloch – All-round dependable player and dynamic ball carrier. The only bad thing was he never threw the lineout to me!
3. Cobus Visagie – When he was at Saracens he was absolutely unstoppable and nobody could touch him in the scrum. He walked around the pitch too often but boy could he scrum!
4. Steve Borthwick – In lineout terms he gave me more problems that anyone else. He would know your calls inside out and always got the best out of his team and you feared him.
5. Scott Murray – A great player. I played the majority of my games with Scotland next to him but the only problem was that all of the lineout ball got thrown to him. He was just so dominant in that area.
6. Jason White – I nurtured him at Watsonians from a scrawny teenager to the finest player in Euroape in the 2005/06 season. Unbeli- evable defensive ability and his tackle could kill people.
7. Dave McIvor – He would be captain. Brave, tough and gave by far the best team talks. Not heard so many expletives in one sentence.
8. Epi Taione – My wildcard. The ‘Banger’ played some of the best and worst games I’ve seen. I wouldn’t pick him in September because he was overweight and in the winter it was too cold, but after that he was the most destructive ball carrier.
9. Gary Armstrong – Nicknamed the ‘Junkyard Dog’ because we was a real forward-thinking No.9. You knew if there was a fight he would be the ninth forward jumping in.
10. Jonny Wilkinson – Best all-round player I’ve seen and between 2000-2003 he was one of the best in the world. His importance in away games, like in France when it was raining were so important. Just a machine.
11. Jonah Lomu – Unstoppable. You could man mark him but he’d just run over you or you’d give him room on the outside and he’d just run straight past you.
12. John Leslie – For a slightly-built guy he always seemed to break the gain- line with such ease. Formed a great combination with Alan Tait for Scotland.
13. Alan Tait – His partnership with JL in 1999 was vintage. He’d run great lines and had a knack for being in the right place at the right time and scoring tries.
14. Jason Robinson – A front five forwards’ worst nightmare. You would hate to be exposed by him one on one and he sent shivers down the spines of everyone. I have been exposed by him many times at Twickenham and I just hated it.
15. Matt Burke – He was the palest Australian I have ever seen and could never get a tan – but he was an exceptionally gifted full-back. He had it all and he was someone who was very trust- worthy and dependable.
