Sheffield Tigers lost their head coach four weeks into pre-season, but Adam Byron stepped up and led his side to an opening-day 26-26 draw against one of the title favourites, Fylde.
Byron, who was backs coach last season, is now in charge due to former boss Mark Luffman joining Women’s Premiership side Sale Sharks.
Despite coming up against a side that finished seven places above them last season, Sheffield Tigers were a good match, with flanker Josh Redfern scoring a brace.
