IN these days of the incompetent 12-strong RFU Board, the English 2nd XV’s dismal showing in Cardiff, ring-fenced Premiership, defunct Premiership clubs, Test matches being shown behind a pay wall and all the other negatives that seem to epitomise the game, how pleasant it was to read Jon Newcombe’s collaboration with Gary Pearce in the My Life in Rugby feature on August 6.
Pearce’s fascinating reminiscences, expertly presented, reminded me why the game was so interesting and uplifting once upon a time.
