EXCITEMENT about England’s ‘heroics’ against Ireland notwithstanding, is it not time for the game to take a more balanced approach to applying red cards, akin to the Game Misconduct model in US sport?
The current law links the sanction of the offending player with the outcome of the game as a contest all too often, rather than allowing this to be determined by the talent of the players.
I say ‘all too often’ because of the increasing need to apply the law more stringently for reasons of player safety.
