Bish was ahead of his time, today he’d be a national hero

OVERSEEING Neath’s halcyon days during the Fifties and early Sixties as coach was Roy Bish, a fine centre who combined his playing career with Aberavon with his schools’ duties. Bish was a coach ahead of his time, who valued his backs more than most and his successful period at Neath was only the start.
For most of the Sixties he was coaching and transforming a Cardiff side where he nurtured the likes of Gareth Edwards, Barry John, Maurice Richards, Gerald Davies and Keri Jones – all of whom toured South Africa with the Lions in 1968.
