WHEN I’m asked if I miss rugby, I always say I don’t miss getting beaten up, but I do miss European games, especially those in France in the back-toback middle rounds. You just knew you were in for a pummelling in the return match and I sort of sadistically looked forward to that challenge.
Take the 2002/03 season, the year we won the Parker Pen Challenge Cup. In the last scrum of the first game against Bordeaux at Wycombe, my opposite number touched his eyes as if to say, ‘you’re going to get gouged next week’.
