NOBODY can accuse the Welsh Rugby Union of not showing real compassion in their handling of the Rob Howley betting issue. While every fair-minded fan will wish him well on a return to the game once his ban has been lifted next summer, two questions remain:
1. Why, given Howley’s confession of 363 illegal bets on rugby matches over a period of five years, did it take the authorities so long to find out?
2. Why, given World Rugby’s anti-corruption laws, did he not confine his gambling to the unlimited opportunities available in horse racing, football and cricket?
