ONE day when I was on the tube going to work, I couldn’t get off at my usual stop because my head was spinning so badly, and it felt like I was going to black out. I had to stay on and do a circular route around London before I felt safe to leave my seat.
Repeated concussions throughout my career – there wasn’t any hiding at full-back in those days – had taken their effect and a specialist told me I had to stop playing immediately.
