Even at this advanced and supposedly enlightened stage of our development as a species, sport clings to its primitive side. Hence the sight last weekend of a highly accomplished participant in a bigticket event being comprehensively smithereened – monstered, marmalised, smashed to kingdom come – by a larger, more brutishly powerful force of nature while trapped in an exposed position and looking the other way.
