SPORT – especially athletics and cycling – is getting to grips with the ‘astrix’ when compiling rolls of honour and I’m afraid the Rugby World, to a certain extent, now needs to follow.
In 2002 Russia were ruthlessly chucked out of the World Cup repechage tournament having fielded two ineligible players in the Europe qualifying competition and now Tahiti, Belgium, Romania and Spain appear to have suffered the same fate.
So we need to revisit the 1999 World Cup and probably the worse case of ‘eligibility doping’ the sport has ever seen.
