Morally correct, but legally inconsistent

I’M confused what the correct decision is as the laws stand.
At the Exeter v Sale game Jack Nowell clearly knocked-on from a Chiefs restart. Play was allowed to continue and Chiefs went on to score a try which was signalled as such by the referee. Steenson quickly converted. Only after this did the referee negate the try for the original Nowell knock-on.
Morally this was correct but it flies in the face of other ‘tries’ given after quick conversions this season.
