THIS week marked the 30th anniversary of the first women’s rugby international between Wales and England which was staged at Pontypool Park where a curious 2,000 crowd turned up. I know because, in the words of Max Boyce, I was there!
I was reporting that day for the South Wales Echo and I’m proud to say that splendid publication gave the game the respect it deserved with a full page report. England won handsomely 22-4 and, if I remember rightly, the England women stayed at the Army barracks in Chepstow on the Saturday night and were all required to buy their own national jersey...
