Owen Farrell will miss the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.
The England fly-half suffered a strain to the medial ligament in his left knee but will stay with the squad for the remainder of the tour.
He will be replaced in the starting XV by Freddie Burns who impressed in the first Test.
England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “The knee has been scanned and there is a strain there. It’s disappointing for Owen as he was desperate to play in the final Test but such is his character that he is already working on his rehab and still contributing to the tour.
“Freddie and whoever we decide for the bench slot now has another opportunity. The challenge facing Freddie is to back up that performance that he produced in the first Test into the third Test. I’m confident he’ll be ready.”
Danny Care is still struggling with a shoulder injury which could hand Lee Dickson an opportunity after his convincing display against the Crusaders today.
“I’ll have a chat with Danny, the physios and everyone else involved on Wednesday to ask the question,” Lancaster said.
“He needs to be 100% physically and mentally to be available for selection because you can’t go into a Test against the All Blacks not in that position, particularly when I’ve got three scrum-halves who are fit and able.”
